Preliminary sales tax revenue figures indicate there may be an $800,000 shortfall in projected operating funds over the next two years in Cape Girardeau; Assistant City Manager Al Stoverink told the City Council last night sales tax revenues are slipping, and he urged the council to make spending adjustments to assure the city books remain in the black.

After delays caused by wet weather, construction is underway on a Missouri Division of Youth Services group home at Sprigg and Washington Avenue in Cape Girardeau.

Garland Powell of Jackson has filed as a Democratic candidate for County Court judge of District 1; he'll take on the incumbent, Democrat Judge A.H. Bender of Pocahontas; Herbert F. Brune, Republican, has filed for that party's nomination, also as judge of District 1.

The Rev. W.E. Pitts and James E. Pledger have become candidates for the Cape Girardeau City Council, enlarging the field seeking the one seat on the council to four; the other candidates are W. Glenn Bishop and Charles A. Palis.

1941

Cape Girardeau residents of Greek extraction, who are deeply interested in the welfare of their native land as it battles along bravely against severe odds in the European war, collect $350 to aid their native land; there are only nine Greeks living here, but they all contribute to the fund, which will be used to help feed people in Greece; Pete George has taken the lead in collecting the funds.

Acting Prosecuting Attorney James A. Finch Jr., issues a advisory that operators of taxicabs may drive outside Cape Girardeau on special trips, but may not operate over regular lines served by another operation; late in 1940, two drivers were cited on charges they were carrying passengers over bus routes on the highway.

1916

Sikeston defeated Caruthersville last night in the final game of the basketball tournament at the Normal School, winning the championship of Southeast Missouri high schools; the silver loving cup will go to Sikeston for the year; the cup will be given permanently to the school winning it three years in succession.

A meeting of managers of baseball teams in the Southeast Missouri League is held in the afternoon; Illmo is granted a franchise in the league, making four towns now known to be certain to play in the league this summer; Chaffee knocks loudly for admission, but isn't quite given entrance.
