The congregation of Lake Country Baptist Church begins holding Sunday services at the Show Me Center; pastor of the church is the Rev. Bernard Gebara.

Robert W. MacDermott, a structural engineer from St. Louis, says the exterior brick walls of the old Opera House can be saved, if its owner chooses to rebuild. Owner Dennis Stockard has said if possible, he will rebuild the historic structure at Broadway and Lorimier Street. The building, home to the Royal N'Orleans Restaurant, was heavily damaged by fire Thursday morning.

1965

Delegates to the Southeast Missouri Teachers Association elect a Dexter (Missouri) High School social studies teacher, Dale Teachout, as first vice president of the association for 1966; as such, she will become president automatically in 1967.

Traffic is jammed on Cape Girardeau's main streets as an estimated 4,500 teachers pour into the city for the annual Southeast Missouri Teachers Association meeting. The police department has assigned six extra men to the regular traffic force to help direct the stream of autos.

1940

Firefighters here are experiencing trouble with the operation of the ladder truck; the clutch on the 23-year-old Robinson truck is wearing out, and parts for the vehicle are no longer manufactured; the engine in the truck was replaced around 10 years ago.

A permit for the construction of a 10-room dwelling at 860 Alta Vista Drive is taken out by Allen L. Oliver, local attorney. The T.P. Barnett Co. of St. Louis is the architect, and C.J. Reisenbichler of Cape Girardeau will be the builder.

1915

ORAN, Mo. -- R.Q. Black, who has bought the Stubblefield farm southwest of town, has contracted with Adam Halter, a carpenter here, to build an eight-room, two-story frame farm house. Other outbuildings also will be erected. The dwelling will cost an estimated $4,000.

A force of men is wrecking the large warehouse at the Jackson flour mill, known as Mill "B," on the west side of the city. Larger and more complete buildings will take the place of this old one.
