Sarah Lynch, a second grade teacher at Alma Schrader School, has earned the Outstanding Educator Award from Phi Delta Kappa.
The Rev. Richard C. Rolwing, pastor of St. Mary's Cathedral, has been named monsignor by Pope John Paul II; the title of honor was bestowed by the pope upon recommendation by Bishop John J. Leibrecht of the Diocese of Springfield- Cape Girardeau, for Rolwing's work as a priest in the Catholic church.
Carlston A. Bohnsack, formerly taking the office of Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce president he has held two months, pledged his energy last night toward further community development; the occasion was the annual chamber dinner at the Arena.
The State College campus has recently been adorned by two sculptures by Hillis Arnold, the internationally known St. Louis sculptor; "Girl Combing Hair" is located in the Dearmont Quadrangle, and "Rhapsody" is in front of the Group Housing cafeteria; the statues have been bought by the college for permanent display.
Dedication services for the First Church of Christ, Scientist, are held in the morning; the building, 215 N. West End Blvd., was constructed in 1929, and final indebtedness was paid off last week.
CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Jake Wehr, who built his home in the Birds Point Spillway atop six huge logs because he didn't trust man's ability to curb floods of the Mississippi River, died yesterday at the county home without revealing much of his past; he came here about 22 years ago and erected his home on six 40-foot cypress logs, the idea being when the floodwater came, his home would ride the waves and not be washed away.
To date, about 500 shares of stock in the Capaha baseball club have been sold; only 1,500 more shares have to e sold to assure the formation of the club and a successful season for the Cape Girardeau team in the Southeast Missouri League; each share of stock carries with it the privilege of participating in a drawing for a Ford touring car.
John Rouse started work a few days ago building two new houses at the corner of William and Ellis streets; one of th houses will be a bungalow, which Rouse will occupy himself; the other will be a five-room cottage.
