The 13th annual Riverfest celebration kicks off in downtown Cape Girardeau, with organizers expecting record crowds ushered out by good weather. The two-day festival offers boat rides, live entertainment, contests, crafts and lots of food.

Filamentous algae, that green scum seen at this time of the year on the surface of farm ponds and shallow lakes, is covering about 25 percent of the surface of Jackson's Rotary Lake in the main city park. The unsightly algae poses no health threat to humans or wildlife.

PERRYVILLE, Mo. --The Perryville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has joined the chorus of agencies condemning the Old Appleton bridge on Highway 61. The board has adopted a resolution condemning the span, scene of numerous traffic accidents over the years.

Charter documents for the establishment of a second Rotary Club in Cape Girardeau have been completed and forwarded to the district governor for endorsement to Rotary International. Approval of the charter is expected within the next fews weeks; the new group will be known as Cape Girardeau West Rotary Club.

1941

Girardeans receive a warning from retail coal dealers that, because of the national defense program, they should place their orders for the winter's fuel supply early, as difficulty already is being experienced in filling demands.

SIKESTON, Mo. -- The new, $40,000 municipal swimming pool here will be formally dedicated tomorrow afternoon, with the ceremonies to be held at the adjacent high school football field. Following the dedication, the pool will be open for inspection for a short time, then opened for business. The pool was a WPA project.

1916

The Cape Girardeau Grocery Co. is the latest organization on a large scale to enter business here. In the next few weeks, it will begin doing business as a wholesale grocery house, with about six traveling salesmen on the road. The Water Street building now occupied by I. Ben Miller and used for the manufacture of ice cream and candy has been leased and will be transformed to fit the grocery business once Miller moves to his new factory.

A crowd filled about half the tabernacle for the evening service of the Forsythe revival yesterday, despite the very unpleasant weather and damp cold. Members of the three Methodist churches marched in a body to the meeting.
