Three Southeast Missouri men were among the 46 members of the 62nd graduating class of the Missouri State Highway Patrol Law Enforcement Academy in Jefferson City: Nelson D. Elfrink of Leopold, Fred J. Stoffregen of Cape Girardeau, and John M. Enderle of Scott City.
Southeast Missouri Hospital administrator O.D. Niswonger is retiring, effective Jan. 1; he will be succeeded by Southeast associate administrator James W. Wente.
Elfrink Construction Co. has been awarded the contract to build an 80-by-50-foot metal building for the Jackson R-2 School District; the building, to be located north of the gymnasium on the site now occupied by tennis courts, will be used for an auto mechanics course to be offered next fall in the high school.
A new state auto license bureau is set to open at Jackson tomorrow, with Mrs. Bob C. Morton in charge; the office will be at 117 W. Main St., the former location of the Jackson Savings and Loan Association.
The congregation of Christ Evangelical Church holds its annual picnic outing in the afternoon and evening at the old fairgrounds on Gordonville Road, west of the city; a vesper service is conducted in the evening by members of the Senior League.
Fred M. Mirley, 45, an insurance agent at Chaffee, Missouri, and formerly of Cape Girardeau, is drowned in St. Francis River near the site of Camp Lewallen, the summer camp of Boy Scouts; quick action by several Scouts saves the life of his 13-year-old daughter, who is caught in a strong whirlpool-like current.
Prosecuting Attorney Lafayette Caruthers has taken James A. Barks as a partner in his legal firm; Barks is well known in Cape Girardeau as a former Normal School student and a native of Perry County; for the past four years, Barks has been superintendent of Hancock School in St. Louis.
The balance of the sale stock of the Conroy Piano Co., which has been located in the Cahoon Building on Broadway for the past two months, is being moved to its store at Poplar Bluff, Missouri; the firm plans to return here in October and open a permanent store.
