CAIRO, Ill. -- The troops come marching home in the evening to a flag-waving, cheering crowd; after eight months of duty as part of Operation Desert Shield and later Operation Desert Storm, the 130 members of the Illinois National Guard's 1244th Transportation Company return to a rousing welcome.

The Cape Girardeau City Council gives initial approval to next year's $27 million city budget despite the objections of Councilman Doug Richards and Mayor Gene Rhodes; both are concerned with the increase in spending.

1966

Three weeks ago, two Cape Girardeau men, a fisherman and a painter-artist, began digging in a farmer's field on the west side of the 2100 block of South Sprigg; Sam King and Pearl Probst have since found 35 skeletons, 18 pieces of pottery, bears' teeth and other Indian artifacts; they haven't removed any of the human remains.

Marvin J. Snider, chief engineer of the state highway engineer, in a letter to the Southeast Missourian newspaper contends most of the traffic difficulties at the Apple Creek bridge at Old Appleton are the result of driver failures; he is reacting to a series of articles and editorials that have appeared in the newspaper about the dangerous bridge.

1941

A change in the building zoning ordinance covering a short section of Morgan Oak Street has been ordered by the city council; both sides of Morgan Oak west from South Spanish Street will be rezoned light industrial instead of as an apartment district; no reason was given for the change, but in recent weeks an application was made for an addition to a service station and restaurant building on the south side of Morgan Oak at Lorimier Street.

One thousand sixty-five students -- 130 of them enrolled for the short five-week "cotton term" -- have registered at Teachers College by noon; enrollment is up slightly over last summer.

1916

A telephone booth has been placed in the corridor of the Jackson courthouse, and the telephone system, connecting all the offices in the courthouse with one central in the clerk's office, is nearly finished; when completed, any office in the courthouse can be reached from any other office in the building without inconveniencing the Bell central; the booth in the corridor will be a semi-public telephone station.

The large boiler that remained in the ruins of the old Stein & Lance mill on Broadway since it was destroyed by fire more than two years ago is hauled by wagon to the baseball-bat factory, just north of the city; H. Brissenden purchased the boiler.
