1990

The Rt. Rev. William A. Jones Jr. of St. Louis, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri, makes his annual visit to Christ Episcopal Church here; Jones is celebrant and preacher at the morning festival Eucharist, and also confirms Elizabeth Berry and receives Anne Spratt into membership in the church.

Six-Gold Indoor Archery Range and Pro Shop has opened at 612 Broadway, at the rear of the Rust & Martin Good Buy Shop; Scott Shy and his wife, Shelby, are managing the operation.

1965

Cape Girardeau County's assessed valuation for personal property and real estate jumped nearly $3,000,000 from 1964 to 1965; Cape Girardeau's real estate assessments rose by $1,692,100 and its personal property assessments showed a jump of $242,980; Jackson's assessed valuation of real property went upward by $225,980 and its personal property by $59,840.

One Girardean is on hand for the launching of Gemini IV in the morning from Cape Kennedy, Florida; Dewey Schade, who has just completed his first year of law school at George Washington University, Washington, D.C., is on assignment with the CBS Television Network for coverage of the four-day space mission

1940

Breaking all previous first-day records, the Teachers College enrolls 1,024 students from 8 a.m. to noon, as the summer term starts; this is 33 more students than were enrolled at noon last year.

C.L. Harrison, chairman of the Library Board, and Eileen Fitzgerald, librarian, appear before the Cape Girardeau City Council to request a 6-cent tax levy for support of the public library instead of the present 5-cent assessment; they tell the council the library can't get the reference material needed and have been limited on the number of popular books purchased.

1915

The European war is having its effect on Missouri, especially the lead belt; every mine where an ounce of lead can be extracted is being worked to the limit by hundreds of laborers.

May Greene leaves for St. Louis in the morning for a 10-day visit with friends; after that, she will go to California to attend the fair and spend the summer with friends; Greene will visit Clara Hauenschild in Oakland and the Stratman family in Los Angeles; on her way home, she will stop at Telluride, Colorado, for a visit with her sister, Mrs. W.A. Nicodemus.
