Wade Williams, an employee of West Lake Quarry near Scott City, was injured yesterday, when a dump truck he was driving ran off a quarry road and overturned into the Mississippi River; he was rescued from the overturned truck by paramedics from the North Scott County Ambulance Service and Scott City firefighters.
VAN BUREN, Mo. -- Sides Construction Co. of Cape Girardeau is awarded the contract to build the nature center and regional headquarters for the Missouri Department of Conservation in Cape County North Park; during the meeting, a project glitch related to the leasing of the property comes to light.
ORAN, Mo. -- The George Tilles Jr., Memorial Park is given to the people of Oran at an afternoon dedication ceremony; among the hundreds of people taking part in the celebration is Cape Girardeau Mayor W.E. Davis and Sikeston (Missouri) Mayor Kendell Sikes; Frank Pellegrino, whose gift enabled the city to acquire the park site, officially present it to Mayor I.C. Mattingly; the park is named for the late president of International Hat Co., which has a branch plant in Oran.
Eric Mount Jr., son of Dr. and Mrs C.E. Mount, preaches the sermon at First Presbyterian Church in Cape Girardeau; he is a graduate student at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.
Damage estimated at $3,500 was done by a fire which gutted a portion of the second floor of the William Luckman Building, 418 Broadway, last night; most of the second floor portion of the brick building was damaged, and furniture in four rooms of the apartment of Mr. and Mrs. Carl W. Priest, on the second floor, was burned; the Priests lost all their clothing, no one being at home when the fire was discovered.
The fair board has decided to charge a 25-cent admission at the entrance to the new city park Sept. 24-29, when the first Southeast Missouri Fair is held; the charge will apply only to persons 12 years old and over.
Worship services for Trinity Lutheran Church are held at the fairgrounds in the morning; afterward, the parochial and Sunday School scholars hold their annual picnic.
NEW MADRID, Mo. -- The New Madrid baseball team defeats the visiting Cape Girardeau Capahas 1-0 in the best game of the season; it is a pitchers' battle, pitting Bacchus of the Caps against Sloan of the Spaniards; Sloan whiffs eight of the visitors, while Bacchus strikes out 12 on the home team; an error in the sixth seals the Capahas' fate.
