Bollinger County, Missouri, Presiding Commissioner Elwood Mouser has proposed conducting a straw poll in Bollinger County to determine whether voters there should be given the opportunity to vote on whether they want a recreational lake.

A plan to reduce timber production at Shawnee National Forest in Illinois is the main point of contention at a Cape Girardeau public hearing, sponsored by the Jonesboro Ranger District. Critics say a reduction in timber production at the forest would cost Southern Illinois jobs and loss in timber sales.

1966

A reception is held in the Fellowship Hall of Grace Methodist Church welcoming the Rev. Howard D. Hardeman as the congregation's new pastor; before coming here, he was pastor of the Fenton (Missouri) Methodist Church for five years.

The Rev. Oscar A. Gerken, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau, was elected first vice president of the Missouri District at the convention of the Western District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod; the convention was held recently at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis.

1941

The district office of the WPA in Farmington, Missouri, announces the number of workers will be cut to 6,600, which will mean heavy reductions in some counties; with only 105 men working on WPA projects in Cape Girardeau County, it hasn't been determined whether there will be a reduction of the rolls here early in July.

Wheat is 91 cents a barrel in Jackson, and the new crop is rolling in by the thousands of bushels. Every day until midnight, a steady line of trucks comes here to mills A and B of the Cape County Milling Co., where thousands of bushels have been placed into the elevators. The company also is storing wheat at Cape Girardeau, Puxico, Allenville, Delta, Whitewater, Ancell and Bell City, Missouri; today, the storing of wheat begins at the old Bollinger Mill at Burfordville.

1916

A new team of fire horses that Mayor Fred Kage purchased Friday in Cairo, Illinois, was received Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m., and an hour later they were given their first practice. The horses aren't as large as those killed several weeks ago, but make a pretty fair team; their names are Frank and Pat, and both are of a bay color.

Michael Daly, the veteran Iron Mountain railroad engineer, dies at his home in Jackson shortly before noon; he was born in Ireland in 1847; Daly was known widely as a railroader, having run the first engine over the Eads River bridge in St. Louis, as well as the first engine into Jackson on the Iron Mountain road.
