DEXTER, Mo. -- Marine Lance Cpl. Kenneth W. Parker, a Dexter resident, died of gunshot wounds received during a battle at Da Nang, South Vietnam; Parker, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Parker, had been in the Marine Corps two years.

The Jackson City Council has voted to change the angle parking on South High Street to parallel parking; this would include the main business district and eliminate about eight parking spaces per block; the council also voted to install parking meters on Barton Street at the bottling plant and on Main Street opposite the post office.

1940

Motor bus systems similar to the one proposed for Cape Girardeau are giving satisfactory service as far as the public is concerned in at least four Missouri cities; James A. Finch Jr., local attorney for the Cape Girardeau Transit Co., which has taken steps to inaugurate service here, says buses and taxicab operations can thrive in the same towns; he points to Joplin, Jefferson City, Columbia and Hannibal as examples.

Roy Ludwig, 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Ludwig of Cape Girardeau, leaves for Fulton, Missouri, to spend a week as an official member of Boys State.

1915

At its meeting last night, the Cape Girardeau City Council agreed unanimously that the city should have a park system; it ordered a special election to be held for a bond issue of $40,000, of which $30,000 will be used to purchase the fairgrounds from the Cape Girardeau Fair and Park Association and $10,000 will be used for improving parks already owned by the city; some residents have been urging the city to purchase the St. Vincent College property near Cape Rock as well, but that wasn't included in the council's plans.

Luther Yarberry has opened an ice cream and soda stand just east of Al Brinkopf's store on Broadway.
