Cadet Lt. Jerome J. Skorzewski, recently appointed to assist in command of Salvation Army work here, is welcomed in the evening at the citadel, 215 Broadway; Skorzewski, who just completed his first year as a student at the Salvation Army School of Officers Training in Chicago, will gain practical summer experience here.

The federally financed program designed to give children of limited circumstances a better start in school will begin in Cape Girardeau tomorrow with an enrollment of about 75 in the 4-to-6 age group; the program is "Operation Head Start."

1940

Judge Robb Ellison of Jefferson City calls on attorneys and other leaders in Cape Girardeau in the interest of his campaign for the Democratic nomination and for re-election to the State Supreme Court bench.

Lou Johnson obtains a permit to build a frame addition to the Second Baptist Church on Frederick Street at Jefferson Avenue; the annex will be 15 by 50 feet and is to afford space for a coal bin, a dining room, for storage and sanitary facilities.

1915

Great work has been done by Vogelsang Brothers on the new Central school building, since a real start was made on the construction two months ago; the big building has reached a point where it is possible to see what a magnificent school house it will be when completed; the three floors are in, and the roof is only held off by a slight delay in getting three tremendous iron beams that will reach across the auditorium and support the roof at one side of the structure.

The German-American Alliance picnic, held at the old fairgrounds, is a great success, with fully 4,000 men, women and children present.
