More rainfall over the upper Mississippi and Missouri river watersheds has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a new flood crest for the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau; the river is expected to crest Monday at 35 feet, three feet above flood stage.

The Cape Girardeau Board of Education approves Saturday morning detention in preparation for a smoking ban at Central High School that goes into effect this fall; the program will provide an alternative to suspension for students caught smoking on the school campus.

1965

A $1,000 reward has been offered for the return of Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" Gill, 2-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Gill of Cape Girardeau, who has been missing since about 4 p.m. Sunday; Mrs. Gill's brother, Robert Burris of Detroit, mailed a $1,000 cashier's check to the city clerk's office, with instructions to give it to the person or people who find the child, either dead or alive.

Six area National Guardsmen received commissions as second lieutenants in graduation exercises held recently at the Missouri National Guard Officer Candidate School at Nevada; they are Robert R. Koehler, Robert G. Little, Clarence L. Suedekum Jr. and Albert C. Moore, all of Cape Girardeau; Gerald B. Dame of Chaffee, Missouri; and Jerry L. Stone of Jackson.

Joseph Haas says in the near future, he will dispose of his 50-acre farm in the west end of the city, south of Broadway, with the exception of his home there; he is having lots staked out and will conduct an auction as soon as plots can be set out.

The 1940 population of six Southeast Missouri counties is announced by W.G. Wicker, district Census supervisor; the population of Cape Girardeau County is 37,833, or a gain of 4,615; Scott County is 30,591, up 4,678; Mississippi is 23,367, up 7,640; Bollinger, 12,960, up 698; Stoddard, 33,354, up 5,904; and Ripley, 12,690, up 1,494.

1915

Members of the Southern Illinois Editorial Association, with their families, arrive on the steamer Peoria to spend the day as guests of the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club.

I. Ben Miller announces he will have a formal opening of his modernized ice-cream parlor Tuesday afternoon; during the early spring, Miller had his store completely renovated and rebuilt; it is now a new place.
