Construction of a Missouri Department of Conservation nature center and regional headquarters in Cape Girardeau is nearing completion. A formal ribbon cutting and open house likely will be held in mid-July.

The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee this week approved funding for several Missouri water projects, including the Cape LaCroix Creek-Walker Branch flood-control project in Cape Girardeau. The committee authorized $10 million for the local project.

1966

The Dow Chemical Co. announces it will establish a manufacturing plant in Cape Girardeau, occupying the former Cape Supply Co. warehouse. The plant will produce insulated building panels for use in the construction of low-temperature spaces.

A State Highway Department maintenance crew is repairing the Old Appleton bridge on U.S. 61. The repairs were necessitated by a fatal accident there Saturday. Another crew is placing two caution signs along the highway north of the dangerous bridge and one south of the span. A sign lowering the speed limit and possibly having a flashing device may be added later.

1941

Shoe Factory Day starts off in Cape Girardeau with a big downtown parade of automobiles carrying hundreds of employees through the business districts and out to the new city park, where a day of entertainment and visiting is planned. Picnic entertainment will include a softball game, boxing matches, a horse show and a dance.

An educational practice gaining favor over the nation will be introduced into at least 16 school systems of Southeast Missouri next September. Plans have been completed for the establishment of the Cape Girardeau Cooperative Sound Film Library. Each participating school will contribute four educational films to the library; these will then be circulated among the participating schools.

1916

Flag Day is celebrated in Cape Girardeau under the direction of the Elks fraternity. School children of both public and parochial schools and choruses from the Normal participate in the afternoon program. The main orator is Judge James A. Finch of Fornfelt.

The furniture and undertaking establishment on Good Hope Street which has been known as the Haarig Furniture Co. and the Southeast Missouri Undertaking Co. has changed its name. In the future, it will be known as the Lorberg Furniture and Undertaking Co. Martin Lorberg owns the business.
