The "Cotton Belt Star" steam locomotive 819 spent the night in Scott City last night, after its trip from Pine Bluff, Arkansas; it's on its way to a railroading convention at Union Station in St. Louis; passengers were bussed to motels in Cape Girardeau overnight.

Several churches and veterans groups are combining efforts to stage an old-fashioned Fourth of July church picnic in Cape Girardeau; in lieu of the traditional Jaycees' demolition derby and fireworks display, this year a "God and Country Celebration" will be held at Arena Park.

The Rev. William C. Krudwig, who is now at St. Mary's Church in Joplin, Missouri, will assume duties as associate pastor of St. Mary's Cathedral here Tuesday; he is replacing the Rev. Raymond W. Kunkle, who will be came pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Piedmont, Missouri; Krudwig was ordained a priest in 1961.

UNIONTOWN, Mo. -- Grace Lutheran Church celebrates its 125th anniversary with two worship services and a basket dinner; guest speakers are the Rev. H.H. Schaefer of Bourbon, Missouri, who was born and reared in the Unitontown area, and the Rev. Roy Bingenheimer of Wathena, Kansas.

Mayor Hinkle Statler suggests the creation of a community round table, composed of a representative of each organization in the city, to discuss and formulate a municipal program; pointing to the need of a well-defined program of civic development, Statler says such an organization would provide a cross section of public sentiment and point the way toward activity in municipal affairs.

At the time of William F. Meier's death recently, it was said that he was the last Civil War veteran in Cape Girardeau County; however, since then, another veteran has been identified; C. Alex Wills, who lives on a farm four miles west of Oak Ridge, is a veteran of the Confederate forces; he is 95 years old.

1915

Louie and Martin Krueger spend the day on Cape LaCroix creek fishing; they bring back 52 of the finny tribe; the fish weren't the largest to be caught, but furnished some mighty good eating for the Kruegers.

No Sunday School is held at Trinity Lutheran Church, as the annual missionfest is held at the fairgrounds; the Rev. F. Wenger of Frohna, Missouri, preaches a mission sermon in the German language in the morning, while the Rev. O. Richert, a missionary from Wilmington, North Carolina, delivers the afternoon sermon in English.
