Standing in for Jackson Mayor Carlton Meyer, Jackson newspaper publisher Gerald Jones took home the prize in the first-ever Tell-a-Tall-Tale Mayoral Contest at Riverfest '90 yesterday; other participating in the contest were Cape Girardeau Mayor Gene Rhodes, Scott City manager Shirley Young, Bell City Mayor Jerry Fisher and Kelso Mayor Johnny Ray Conklin.

WITTENBERG, Mo. -- It's 68 miles from Wittenberg to the other side of the Mississippi River, unless you go by boat; then its less than a half mile; a group of Altenburg, Frohna and Wittenberg businessmen, under the auspices of the Saxony Hills Development Corp., is studying the feasibility of installing a ferry system at Wittenberg.

Lonnie Blackwood, captain of the Cape Girardeau Central High School basketball team and combination pitcher-first baseman for the baseball team, has been honored with the Lou Muegge Award for the 1964-1965 school year as the outstanding athlete at the school.

1940

The Cape Girardeau Jaycees are asked by Chet Payne, who was connected prominently with a walkathon held here 18 months ago, to sponsor a running derby; in many ways "All-American Endurance Derby" would be similar to a walkathon; a committee will investigate the matter and report back to the organization.

A judgment for $82,705 in favor of the school board of Greenville, Missouri, and against the government was granted Saturday in federal court here, the government taking title to the modern school structure; the present site of Greenville will be flooded in the Wappapello reservoir, and the government must pay for property there.

1915

Plans and specifications for permanent road work, such as the cutting of hills and building concrete culverts and bridges, for 1915 have been completed by county engineer Dennis Scivally, amounting to $9,377.

Jack Beaudean, a young man who formerly played baseball with the Capahas, is seriously and painfully injured in the morning at a south side lumber mill; one arm is pulled into the rollers of a planing machine, and the muscles are badly crushed and bruised.
