MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Bollinger County officials are collecting ballots that apparently will decide the fate of a proposed Cape Girardeau-Bollinger counties recreational lake. The informal straw poll is asking Bollinger County voters whether they want the lake issue to be decided in a November election.

Vandals struck again at Old Lorimier Cemetery on Thursday and Friday nights, just days after repairs were completed to tombstones that were vandalized less than a month ago.

1966

Air traffic of participants in the Powder Puff Derby was a continuous flow yesterday afternoon as 41 competing airplanes landed at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport. The port here was one of 11 optional stops between the Seattle, Washington, starting point and the Clearwater, Florida, terminus. Planes cease landing here about 2 p.m.

Torrid midsummer air continues to keep Cape Girardeau and the area in the clutches of a prolonged heat wave for which no relief is in sight. The mercury bobbed up to 98 degrees yesterday, marking the 15th consecutive day of 90-plus temperatures here.

1941

Contract for construction of a basement beneath Trinity Lutheran Church has been let by committee to William Klaproth. The church now has no basement except for a small furnace room.

Those who sell fireworks say sales of the explosives over the Fourth of July this year was the lightest in many years. Several dealers report their sales were off 50 percent from a year ago and previous years. Some say they didn't stock as large as a supply as in former years because of the growing prejudice against fireworks, and in some cases, because of the need of what goes into fireworks for defense purposes, they didn't get half of what they did order.

While the final profit made from the Fourth of July picnic isn't known yet, the ladies of the Civic Improvement Association have pledged to give $100 of that sum to the fund for the purchase of a public library lot, building and equipment.

Three-Mile Creek is the popular spot for swimming parties these hot summer days. Last evening, several young people went to the creek, where they ate their suppers and later enjoyed a refreshing dip. Those in the party were Blanche Oakley, Lorene Dalton, Grace Cracraft, Irene Pott, Irene Williams, Robert Beckman, Robert Harrison, Norman Gaines, Lloyd Gold and C. Cook of Fredericktown, Missouri.
