WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. -- Cape Girardeau's Kohlfeld Capahas got shutout pitching from Rick Pecaut, Ritchie Phillips and Darrell Dannenmueller and home runs from Bruce Qualls, Steve Williams and Mark Simmons on Wednesday night to hammer West Frankfort, 8-0. The victory was the eighth straight for the Caps, now 19-10, and was the 14th victory in the last 16 games.

Fifty-three of the "best women pilots" in the world begin setting down at Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport in the 1966 Powder Puff Derby, which started yesterday at Seattle. First in today are sisters Elaine Leoning of Half Moon Bay, California, and Katherine Gahagan of Sands Point, New York, her co-pilot.

Richard D. Kinder has been appointed director of organization of the Missouri Young Democrats. The position is the highest appointive office in the state organization. Kinder is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Luke F. Kinder of Cape Girardeau.

1941

The Townsend Furniture Co. has started an improvement project at 40 N. Main St., which will extend the store from Water Street to Main Street. The Water Street store entrance will remain, but an entrance also will be provided on the east side of Main. The stores will be connected, and the entire establishment will be redecorated.

Encouraged by pleasantly cool weather, a record number of people attended the American Legion's Fourth of July picnic yesterday at Fairground Park. The night crowd is estimated by Legion commander Lawrence C. Snider at 32,000 people.

1916

The good ladies of the Civic Improvement Association earned approximately $1,000 at their Fourth of July picnic at the fairgrounds. The money made from the day's festivities will be spent on beautifying the city.

The Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis gives a decision affirming the judgment of the late Judge R.G. Ranney in the case of Frank McGuire of Jackson against the mayor and city council of Jackson. Ranney's judgment was a permanent injunction that should stand against the city and prevent it from cutting down some trees in front of McGuire's property so a concrete sidewalk might be built along the line where the trees grow. McGuire had disputed the surveys made by the Jackson engineers in locating the walk.
