Bollinger County Presiding Commissioner Charles Hahn is leaning toward supporting a November election date on a Cape Girardeau-Bollinger counties lake proposal; earlier, Cape County Presiding Commissioner Gene Huckstep has indicated he also favors holding a vote in November.

Residents living in the area around Lorimier Cemetery say they want the city to limit access to the burial grounds; in a 33-signature petition, residents asked the city to close the two east entrances to the cemetery along Penny Avenue; one of the entrances aligns with the corner of Dunklin Street and Penny.

The American Legion Fourth of July celebration continues at Arena Park, and will conclude late this evening with a fireworks display; at 1 p.m. today, bells in Cape Girardeau and across the country peal simultaneously to mark the 189th anniversary of the start of this nation.

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Chancellor John W. Schwada of the University of Missouri has announced appointments to the faculty and staff affecting the Columbia campus of the university; they include John T. Wissmann, assistant instructor in French, and Gayle R. Moxley, graduate assistant in physical education; both are from Cape Girardeau.

Attendance at yesterday's Independence Day picnic, sponsored by the American Legion at Fairground Park, was estimated at 30,000, the biggest picnic crowd in history; around 1,000 World War veterans from the county were in attendance.

A large crowd is present to officially open Cape Girardeau's new bowling alleys, the Playdium, 115 Themis St.; the Playdium occupies the second floor of a new, two-story building, erected on the site of the old Elks building; after giving a short talk, Mayor Hinkle Statler rolls the first ball; partners in the enterprise are Albert Smith and Bill Green.

1915

About 400 people from Cape Girardeau and Jackson and nearly 100 from Commerce, Missouri, took in the boat excursion yesterday on the steamer Cape Girardeau to Cairo, Illinois; it was one of the finest excursions ever taken out of this city and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

Dr. W.C. Patton and A.M. Tinsley leave in the morning for California to take in the Panama Exposition and, incidentally, to count the oranges in the doctor's several ranches.
