Two former First Federal Savings and Loan facilities in Cape Girardeau and one in Jackson will be closed, says an official of Cape County Bank, which purchased First Federal; the Cape Girardeau facilities to close are at West Park Mall and on William Street.

A study released by The Road Information Program shows nearly 14,000 Missouri bridges are considered substandard, and $5.25 billion is needed to repair the structures; the study shows 60 percent of Missouri's bridges are deficient and in need of repair or replacement.

Interstate 55 from Scott City to Benton, Missouri, is scheduled to be opened to traffic Tuesday afternoon, but motorists still will have about a mile of two-way traffic at Scott City while interchange work is completed.

Bids for the purchase of police cars were submitted by police commissioner Al Nenninger to the city clerk for filing yesterday, after withholding them from this newspaper's inspection for two days; the low bidder as the figures were read was Ford Groves Motor Co., for the sale of the two cars; the police department bought two Oldsmobiles from Townes Cadillac-Oldsmobile, Nenninger says the cars offered by Groves didn't have the equipment needed for police use.

1940

Relief from the heat wave in Cape Girardeau was short-lived; after a shower yesterday afternoon, the temperature bounded back into the record column, reaching 100 degrees for the season's high mark; today is the twelfth in succession that temperatures here have gone above the 90-degree mark.

Two additional sites are likely to be considered for the new federal building in Cape Girardeau; one is the Raymond Brady oil station lot at the northeast corner of Broadway and Pacific Street, and the other is the spot occupied by the Christian Church and possibly adjacent lots, at the northeast corner of Sprigg and Themis streets.

1915

Clarence Dormeyer of Herculaneum, Missouri, passes through Cape Girardeau on his way home; he had been spending a few days with his father, Fred Dormeyer, at Jackson.

The section crews from Allenville, Delta, Lutesville, Morley and Oran, Missouri, have been putting in a switch at Delta for the past several days; the Cotton Belt lead was recently removed, which made it necessary to put in a switch with an opening on the east end of the I.M. yards.
