Jackson police chief Robert "Red" Clifton says motorists are using the center turn lane of U.S. 61 from the Shawnee Boulevard intersection eastward to the end of the current four-lane pavement improperly; motorists leaving businesses on each side of the four-lane highway are using the center turning lane illegally as an acceleration lane before merging into traffic.

Some National Guard officers are called to the 140th Infantry Regiment headquarters at Sikeston, Missouri, and are given promotions; Percy R. Wickham of Sikeston, formerly of Cape Girardeau and until recently commander of Headquarters Company here, who also advances to the rank of captain.
