Leibrecht of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese, has announced 26 new pastoral assignments; in Cape Girardeau, the Revs. Donald Berkbigler, C.M., and Ronald Hoye, C.M., have been appointed associate pastors at St. Vincent's Catholic Church; at St. Mary's, the Rev. Michael Zoellner, O.S.B., has been named associate pastor, succeeding the Rev. Joseph Orthel; Orthel has been moved to St. Agnes Cathedral in Springfield.

The congregation of Red Star Baptist celebrates the 75th anniversary of the church with a variety of events; the church began as a mission of First Baptist Church on July 23, 1916.

1966

The Cape Girardeau County Board of Equalization has written a letter formally protesting the 50 percent blanket increase in county auto assessments ordered by the State Tax Commission; the move will increase the total assessed valuation of the county by about $2.8 million, to $8,405,250 on autos alone.

The license bureau in Cape Girardeau, as bureaus elsewhere in Missouri, now is issuing metal state car licenses; the little plastic tabs, which auto owners have been sticking on the metal plates for years, are out, off and gone; Pauline Yount, office head, said car owners seem happy to get the fresh new plates.

1941

After visiting points in Minnesota and Canada following the close of the Optimist International convention in Minneapolis, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer C. Stehr and son, John Edward, and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Simpson and daughter, Emily, have returned home to Cape Girardeau; they were away two weeks.

David Stern announced he has purchased the interest of his father, Julius Stern, in the Broadway Fruit Market, 616 Broadway, and will operate it in the future; the elder Stern, who has been in business at that location for 20 years, likely will retire.

1916

Adolph Kuellmer, Jackson's only military representative on the Mexican border, writes some remarkable things about the way things are handled down there; as an example of military efficiency, he wrote that the First Regiment Band, of which he is a member, consists of 29 men, but has only eight instruments; the rest were lost in transit.

Dr. I.L. Holt, former pastor of Centenary Methodist Church, who left here last fall for Dallas, where he holds an important chair in a Methodist theology college, is spending several days here renewing acquaintances.
