1994

Jane O'Connell and other residents along East Cape Rock Drive want to keep the flag flying high at Cape Rock Park; this week, several residents formed the Ward 1 Neighborhood Association; they'll keep watch for vandals who in recent weeks have downed several flags and flag poles at the park.

KASKASKIA, Ill. -- They come to Mass hoping for a miracle, a way to save their historic church; but there is no miracle; Bishop Wilton Gregory of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Belleville, Illinois, tells the 125 people gathered in the 150-year-old Church of the Immaculate Conception the church will cease to hold regular services at the end of August; the church, like other structures on Kaskaskia Island, was battered by floodwaters last summer.

1969

Girardeans stand proud with the rest of the nation as it watches Apollo 11 soar aloft and then, some 2 3/4 hours later, leave Earth's orbit for the moon and man's first step on the satellite; in a display of patriotism, American flags fly throughout the city; it appears every individual homeowner is flying a flag in honor of the three brave astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins.

The name of James A. Finch Jr., former Cape Girardeau attorney and now a Missouri Supreme Court justice, is being widely mentioned as a possible appointee to the U.S. Supreme Court; the Cape County Bar Association has adopted a resolution endorsing Finch as a successor to former Justice Abe Fortas.

1944

New officers for the Christian Church in Cape Girardeau have taken over their work and will serve until the end of the fiscal year; elected Monday were professor E.A. Collins, chairman of the board; professor H.O. Grauel, vice chairman; C. Roy Rudolph, recording secretary; John S. Smarr, financial secretary and E.L. Robison, treasurer.

Obtaining 15 hits and aided by eight errors, the Capahas have little trouble defeating the St. Louis Negro Giants, 13-2, at Fairground Park to even the two-game series and force a third contest here Aug. 20 to decide honors for the year; Carlton Nebel, right fielder, paces the Caps with four hits in five at bats, getting a triple, two singles and a double.

1919

The route selected by delegates at yesterday's convention for the Mississippi River Scenic Highway will closely follow the old Kings Highway; the majority of the mileage is on the present location of state highways throughout various counties; it is planned to build the highway from Lake Itasca in Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico.

Jackson may yet be mayorless in spite of the special election held July 8, at which Sikes F. Rodgers was elected almost unanimously; someone has discovered an ordinance stating, "No person shall hold or occupy the office of mayor unless he be 25 years of age..."; Rodgers is 24.
