Gov. John Ashcroft yesterday signed legislation that will allow voters in Cape Girardeau and Bollinger counties to decide the fate of a proposed recreational lake for the two counties. The legislation allows voters to decide whether to levy a 1-cent sales tax to pay for the construction of the 7,700-acre lake. It also would enable the counties to form a local authority to oversee the lake's development and maintenance.
High temperatures yesterday of 69 degrees and today of 70 degrees set new records for each date for the lowest high temperatures reached here; earlier in the week, Cape Girardeau had triple-digit temperature readings.
International Shoe Co. plans to end its present men's shoe manufacturing operation in Cape Girardeau, but there is optimism that a unit of the Florsheim Shoe Co., a division of International, will locate in the North Main Street plant here.
Workers with the Main Street Levee Improvement District are repairing cobblestones damaged by high water and vandals along the riverfront by Water Street. The job consists of digging up and replacing some of the rip-rap around the floodwall gate areas. Some of the cobblestones originally were placed on the wharf in the late 1800s.
The Illmo-Fornfelt Big Bucks extend their winning streak to seven games, and Paul Bray scores his second straight shutout victory in as many days as the Bucks silence the Capahas, 6-0, at Illmo.
The largest attendance of the revival campaign, being held in a tent at Lorimier and Themis streets under the auspices of the Church of Christ, is present for the evening service. The Rev. J.D. Harvey is serving as evangelist.
Charles Boutin and a few other society folks come in from the camping party on the Whitewater River early in the morning. He reports a most interesting time in camp, and the 22 young people are having the time of their life. The cook is doing good service; french-fried potatoes and prunes are the main diet.
Myrtle Dunn, who has been teaching in Cape Girardeau three years, most recently at the Broadway School, has been hired to teach at Kirkwood, Missouri.
