A portable classroom is being installed at Franklin Elementary School to make room for two special-education programs; the double-wide mobile home is the fifth portable classroom pressed into service by Cape Girardeau Public Schools.
The Cape Girardeau area sizzled yesterday under a second consecutive day of 100-degree-plus heat, which set a record high for July 9; the 102 reading at the airport broke the old record of 100 degrees set in 1971 and 1986; in an effort to combat the heat, the Salvation Army is opening its doors to those who lack air conditioning in their homes.
The hollow section near Magill Hall on the State College campus is being filled for use as a play field; the project, under contract to Max Stovall, means the removal of a small building that formerly housed the seismograph; the new play area will partly replace the section that will be lost when the addition to Kent Library is built.
The new electronic landing device being installed at the municipal airport, the TVOR, is in position on the west side of the present runway; it's expected to be operational by Sept. 1.
SIKESTON, Mo. -- Plans are announced for establishing a hospital here, to serve both the community and the Army flying school, being constructed here; the plan is to secure the J.A. Sutterfield dwelling, a building of 13 rooms, four baths and a full basement, for use as a hospital; the purchase would be made by means of a bond issue.
Contractor R.C.E. Landgraf begins the excavation of the basement for a one-story brick business building Chris Bauer is having constructed at 710 Broadway; when completed, the building will be occupied by the General Contracts Purchase Corp., which now has offices on South Sprigg Street.
Cornelius Newton Kinder, commonly known as Pete, a farmer living near Gordonville, brings a Seth Thomas clock to Jackson to have it repaired; there is nothing remarkable about the timepiece, except that it is more than 100 years old.
Henry Meystedt of Cape Girardeau purchased the general merchandise store at Froemsdorf, Missouri, from W.R. Lindsay; the latter will continue to run it for him.
