CHARLESTON, MO. -- Former 160th District state representative Betty Hearnes confirms she is leaning toward making a bid to re-gain that post; Hearnes gave up her House seat in 1988, when she unsuccessfully challenged Republican Gov. John Ashcroft.

Veteran Cape Girardeau attorney James A. Finch Jr. was honored at a banquet last night by the Cape County Bar Association at the Colonial Restaurant; Finch, who has practiced law in the county for more than 30 years, will be sworn in as a member of the Missouri Supreme Court on Friday.

A 14-mile section of Interstate 55, from Benton, Missouri, south to the Interstate 57 intersection with U.S. 61 southeast of Sikeston, Missouri, will be opened to traffic Tuesday morning; still to be opened to traffic is a 6.7-mile gap from Scott City south to the interchange east of Benton.

River watchers say the Mississippi River is a foot lower at Cape Girardeau than it was yesterday; should the extreme cold continue a few more days, it is believed the river will gorge or freeze over here.

Jackson is being considered by the Bureau of Aeronautics for the location of an airport; an engineer, in the company of Dr. D.R. Seabaugh, who is a pilot, have examined several Jackson area sites, but none have proven satisfactory; it is proposed to locate the airport somewhere between Cape Girardeau and Jackson.

Teams from Cairo, Illinois, and Poplar Bluff, Missouri, may be welcomed into the Southeast Missouri Baseball League next season; the probable makeup of the league is nearly the sole topic of conversation in those places where baseball is always a live subject.

Charles H. Daues, who was virtually kicked out of Cape Girardeau about eight years ago by a certain element who took offense at his stern prosecution of immorality, has been appointed city counselor of St. Louis by Mayor Henry Kiel.
