Four Cape Girardeau County Jail prisoners were treated for smoke inhalation early Tuesday morning after an inmate ignited a mattress in his cell; none of the prisoners was seriously injured, but the fire forced the evacuation of all of the nearly 60 prisoners.

Three solid hours of boxing, participated in by 30 fighters in a 15-match card, held a crowd of 1,300 persons spellbound last night in the Arena Building; 11 of the pugilists won on decisions, and the other four triumphed via knockouts; the competition was part of the annual Golden Gloves tournament, sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Jaycees.
Gov. E.W. Major has issued a call for a special election to be held Feb. 19 for the selection of a judge of the Court of Common Pleas at Cape Girardeau; the vote will fill the bench left vacant by the death of Judge R.G. Ranney.
The Mosella Elligood property at the corner of Spanish and Themis Streets was sold at auction Friday; there was only one bid, the First National Bank offering $7,500 for it; the property, the location of the public library, is in good condition and is said to be very cheap at the price.
