MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Patriotism is the spirit of the day here, as many in the community turn out for a parade to show support for the American troops in the Persian Gulf. About 50 civic, school and church groups participate.
Workers at area Florsheim operations had to wait an extra day to pick up their payroll checks yesterday. The checks were delayed due to financial troubles of Florsheim's parent company, Interco. All Cape Girardeau Florsheim companies were affected, including the shoe plant on West End Boulevard, the sole leather plant on Nash Road and the factory store in the Town Plaza.
The city annexation case will go to the State Supreme Court on appeal by intervenors of the judgment of the Common Pleas Court. The notice of appeal is filed in Common Pleas Court in the morning. Intervenors in the suit are F.J. Armstrong, Homer A. George, Leonard M. Edmisten and Russell Armstrong.
A set of procedures governing city purchases is submitted to the City Council by City Manager Paul F. Frederick. He hopes to have the new system implemented Feb. 1.
W.H. Bohnsack Jr., 78, a retired Cape Girardeau merchant, dies at a hospital in Orlando, Florida. He went there Jan. 12, accompanied by a daughter and granddaughter, to visit his sister, Mrs. Bertha Kuntz.
Seven of the 16 Cape Girardeau County men sent to Jefferson Barracks on Tuesday for induction into the U.S. Army and later sent to the reception center at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, have received their permanent post assignments. They are at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, for assimilation in the 128th Field Artillery, Missouri National Guard. Assigned to the South Carolina Post from this area were Harry F. Gill, Charles N. Seabaugh, Charles W. Bowerman, Paul H. Beaudean, James R. Kattes, Forrest L. Lynn and Louis M. Jauch.
W.H. Stubblefield Jr., president of the Provident Association here, says that filth and large families of children and tuberculosis are running a race for supremacy among the needy of the outlying areas of the town. He advocates for the implementation of the law providing for the appointment of a juvenile court officer to look after the welfare of destitute children.
Twenty-one lawyers, members of the Cape Girardeau County Bar Association, meet at the Common Pleas Courthouse. That body decides not to endorse any one lawyer, regardless of political affiliation, for the place on the vacant bench of the Common Pleas Court. Orren Wilson already has declared his interest in replacing the late Robert Ranney.
