A dilapidated 1935 water tower in Scott City, which hadn't been used since 1988, was pulled down yesterday by Pittsburgh Tank and Tower Co. of Lexington, Kentucky; residents living near the 75,000-gallon tower at the corner of Warner Street and Broadway had asked city officials for its removal; they had worried it wouldn't withstand an earthquake.

The good news for Cape Girardeau officials is that the city's population during the 1980s didn't decline as initial U.S. Census Bureau figures showed; the bad news is that the increase was only 77 people.

1966

WITTENBERG, Mo. -- The directors of EPCO Co. of Altenburg announce it has made arrangements for the operation of a ferry between Wittenberg and Grand Tower, Illinois; the service is slated to begin about May 1.

Voters in the Cape Girardeau County Public Water Supply District No. 2 vote 137-0 to issue $300,000 in revenue bonds for construction of a water system; a well or wells are to be drilled; the initial system construction will run from the Millersville area eastward to near the junction of highways 72 and 34 near Jackson.

1941

Three public schools were burglarized over night and, although nothing of value was stolen, considerable damage was done to windows and doors; papers and equipment in numerous rooms were scattered at May Greene, Lorimier and Central High.

County Clerk Louis H. Schrader says the County Court, at its meeting Monday, may take some action regarding the removal of the November election ballots from the county for a re-count; the clerk has talked to members of the court and said the two Republican members are unwilling to have the ballots taken out of the county for a re-count; while court members are willing for a bipartisan board to re-count the ballots locally, they may seek a restraining order to halt the removal of the ballots from the county.

1916

The Caldwell-Sherman Store on Main Street has been renamed the Sherman store, the name Caldwell being dropped; Sam Sherman has bought out his partner's interest in the store and will operate it with the help of his father, D. Sherman, a pioneer merchant of Fredericktown, Missouri.

Attorney Orren Wilson announces in Jackson he is a candidate for the Republican nomination to fill the post vacated by the death of Common Pleas Court Judge R.G. Ranney.
