One of the nation's largest retailers was so impressed by a Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce strategic plan for economic growth that it will donate $6,000 to the chamber's cause; the chamber will be given $2,000 each year for the next three years under a Wal-Mart Foundation grant agreement.

Scott County Circuit Judge Anthony Heckemeyer issues a temporary restraining order, limiting the actions of striking workers at West Lake Quarry near Scott City; the company asked for the court order in the wake of alleged incidents of vandalism on the part of strikers.

The completion date for Cape Girardeau's new post office building hasn't yet been determined; Charlie Clark, construction supervisor at the site, says the determining factor for the completion date will be the weather, which in recent weeks has disrupted outside work.

A cast of nearly 100 area residents is drilling in twice-a-day rehearsals for final polishing on acts in the Jaycee Follies, set for next Friday and Saturday at Academic Hall; the all-amateur musical variety show is being directed by Craig Atkinson of Cargill Productions, a New York City theatrical company.

President W.W. Parker of the Teachers College has been re-elected to serve his second year as head of the Southeast Missouri Area Council of Boy Scouts of America.

The Mississippi River reaches the lowest stage at Cape Girardeau in eight years after an 11-inch fall over the weekend; the stage here is 2.7 feet, but despite the low stage the river is not yet frozen over or gorged here.

1915

A fine boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Harrison at Saint Francis Hospital last night; he was the first child born in the new institution; the child will bear the name Charles H. Harrison Jr.

Dr. Anita E. Bohnsack,. who was graduated from a school of osteopathy last summer and who has since been practicing her profession at Portland, Oregon, arrives home in the evening; in the near future she will open an office here.
