Four Cape Girardeau teenagers were arrested and charged Tuesday for allegedly taking part in a burglary ring that carried out 17 burglaries here since mid-November; they also are suspected of being involved in burglaries in Cape Girardeau County and Scott City.

Sgt. Robert Scott of the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department is the 1990 recipient of the Timothy J. Ruopp Award for outstanding and distinguished service; Scott has been with the department since 1984.

1966

The anticipated cutback in federal spending on domestic projects may cause a delay in the construction of a new federal building in Cape Girardeau; it is becoming generally accepted the increasing financial burden of the war in Vietnam could well force the suspension for a time of much domestic spending.

Lt. Col. O.T. Dalton, battalion commander, 1st Battalion, 140th Infantry of the National Guard, said the battalion is going to Puerto Rico in July; it will be the first time a Missouri Guard unit undergoes summer training outside the continental United States; it also will be the first time an Army Guard unit from Missouri will be airlifted to camp.

The 87 members of the mid-year senior class at Central High School, who will graduate this month, observe the school's traditional "Tacky Day"; this annual custom started too far back for most members of the faculty to recall; pupils come to school dressed in all sorts of getups, some of the boys tripping about in feminine apparel, while some girls try their best to appear mannish in masculine garb.

David Spradlin, a retired farmer, dies of infirmities of advanced age at his home between Illmo and Commerce, Missouri; he succumbs on his 73rd birthday anniversary; he is survived by four sons, seven sisters and three brothers; his wife, the former Nancy Belk, died in 1903.

The Rev. Frank Y. Campbell, pastor of the Baptist Church, offered his resignation at the regular services of the church yesterday; to many this was a great surprise, and they hope their pastor will change his mind before the congregation acts on his offer.

Quite a lot of excitement is created in Haarig early in the morning, when a horse belonging to the Wielpuetz bakery and hitched to a delivery wagon runs away; loaves of bread are scattered along the street for a block's length.
