Survey boats from the Army Corps of Engineers took depth soundings recently in the John L. Wescoat Marina and Mississippi River Access Point at Trail of Tears State Park; the results will determine whether modifications made nearly four years ago to a wing dike on the north side of the harbor have reduced the sedimentation problem that has kept the marina from opening since it was constructed in 1974-1975.
A police and fire training center, complete with a handgun firing range, will be developed on a 7 1/2-acre site on South Sprigg Street; the property, formerly Central Foods, was purchased by the city of Cape Girardeau from Boatmen's Bank; the bank donated the money, $25,000, back to the city for improvements at the location.

Donnell is inaugurated Missouri's 40th governor in the afternoon; even as he takes the office, his Democratic opponent of last November, Lawrence McDaniel, is readying a petition challenging Donnell's slim vote majority on the official returns; the fight over the results of the election delayed Donnell's inauguration 44 days.
