CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Chaffee residents yesterday overwhelmingly approved a proposed $150,000 industrial bond issue that will finance the expansion of the Chaffee Manufacturing Co.

A group of Teachers College students is hoping to raise enough money to bring a nationally known swing band to Cape Girardeau for a jam session this spring; no orchestra has been signed, but leading in consideration is Woody Herman, who is currently playing in the Panther Room at the Hotel Sherman in Chicago.

Fifty-two birdhouses built by Cape Girardeau youths are judged in the annual birdhouse contest sponsored by the Audubon Club of Central High School; the grand prize goes to August Birk Jr., a pupil at Franklin School; this year, birdhouses built by girls were also entered in the contest.

The boards of stewards of the three Jackson congregations that brought Evangelist Steve Burke to town for a revival decided last night to build a tabernacle for his use; it will be largest building of its kind ever seen in Jackson; the lawn just south of McKendree Methodist Church will be its location.

At the stroke of midnight tonight, Allenville will become a dry town; saloon promoters have failed in their efforts to get enough signatures on petitions to stay in business.
