After suffering through a year with no general pay hikes, Southeast Missouri State University employee groups are pushing for increased salaries and other compensations. The three major groups -- the Faculty Senate, the Professional Staff Council and the Clerical-Technical-Service Staff Council -- presented their compensation proposals to the university's budget-review subcommittee late last week.

State Rep. David Schwab of Jackson files for re-election to a third term in the Missouri House of Representatives. A Republican, Schwab has a farming operation near Jackson.

1967

The Jackson R-2 School Board has voted to extend a one-year contract to R.O. Hawkins, superintendent, but at the same time has indicated his employment will terminate at the end of that contract. Hawkins said he hasn't made up his mind whether to accept the contract.

Forecasts for light snow were buried yesterday afternoon and night beneath an eight-inch mantle of white. It was the heaviest snowfall to descend on Cape Girardeau since Thanksgiving 1958. The storm threw its heaviest punch in mid-afternoon, which was unfortunate timing for homeward-bound motorists; a massive traffic snarl developed in all parts of the city during the rush hour, and tie-ups on the highways were reported as well.

1942

More than 700 boys and girls in schools of the city are to be immunized against smallpox and diphtheria, it was decided Monday at a meeting of the school board and the city board of health. Superintendent of schools L.J. Schultz said the school and city boards will cooperate in an effort to reach all children not treated by family physicians or in indigent clinics held earlier in the school year.

Residents of Thebes, Illinois, are mystified and concerned by an airplane that flies around over the Mississippi River in the vicinity of the Thebes railroad bridge for some time. Residents thought the flyer was from the airport in Cape Girardeau until they were told the local field has been closed temporarily because of new government regulations.

1917

A compromise drainage-district bridge bill has been introduced in both Senate and House of the state Legislature that will save Cape Girardeau County the expense of building bridges over the diversion channel of the Little River Drainage District, where that big water course cuts public roads in seven or eight places. It is said the drainage district isn't opposed to the compromise bill.

C.C. McSpadden, a prosperous young merchant of Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, plans to open a gents' furnishing establishment in Cape Girardeau this spring. The store will be on upper Broadway.
