Around 2,300 people packed the A.C. Brase Arena Building in the evening to hear a free concert presented by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. The concert is one of a series the orchestra is holding around the state.
Ten students at Cape Central High School spend their Saturday morning in school voluntarily. Instead of an out-of-school suspension, students who misbehave now are given the option of serving their punishments on Saturday at the school.
Even when C.W. Rushing, general manager of the Missouri Barge Lines here, is in port, his name will be found on the rivers of the inland waterway system. The newest towboat of the Cape Girardeau barge line has been named The C.W. Rushing for the veteran river pilot.
Jackson voters yesterday approved $375,000 in general obligation bonds to fund water and sewer improvements. Although there are still 31 absentee ballots out, city officials are confident enough of them would be in favor of the issue to declare the victory. The vote was the third attempt at passing the bonds, and voter turnout was higher than in the previous election Dec. 7.
The basement of the Sunday School building of Red Star Baptist Church was renovated during the past week. The woodwork was painted and a new ceiling installed. The men of the congregation did the work.
More than 2,000 people attend the three performances of "Gone with the Wind" at the Fox Broadway Theater, according to manager Roy Cato. The picture, which first was shown here a year ago, will continue at the Broadway through Wednesday.
E.C. Embree, a young man who has been in the restaurant business in Thebes, Illinois, for several years, and who says he has had considerable river experience, arrives here in his launch, the Cecil. He is making arrangements to start a packet service between Cape Girardeau and Thebes within the next 10 days.
D.A. Glenn has secured the lease on the Whitelaw building and will take possession of it on or before March 15. This building long has been used as the south half of the original Glenn store and is particulary adapted to the dry-goods and ladies' clothing busines. As soon as Glenn secures control of it, the connections with the adjoining building will be closed, and the two places will be made independent of each other.
