It's moving day for the remaining tenants in the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport Terminal building as the city prepares for a $1.1 million renovation of the facility; renovation will begin later this spring, but tenants are being asked to relocate temporarily to prepare the building for asbestos removal.

1967

The St. Charles Hotel, which has witnessed Cape Girardeau from its location at Themis and Main streets for 129 years, is coming down. W. Glenn Bishop, contractor for the demolition, says his crew will begin removing the roof of the hotel Thursday, if weather permits. Inside, dismantling and removal of plaster, doors, radiators and plumbing fixtures has been in progress.

Grading work is underway on a 4 1/2-acre tract just purchased by the Hanover Lutheran Church congregation for expansion of its church. Acquired from Howard Hinkle, the land lies just south of the pastor's residence and west across Perryville Road from the 120-year-old brick church building. No definite building plans for the new church have been made yet.

1942

The Cape Girardeau public-school system has been designated by the State Department of Education to participate in the construction of model airplanes for use by the Navy in training fliers. The local schools have been assigned the construction of four sets of 50 models each.

At a late hour this morning, 204 men had registered for military service at Cape Girardeau and at Jackson; 44 of these were from the county seat, and 160 were recorded here. Enrollment will continue until 9 p.m. and will continue at both places Sunday and Monday. The first man to register at Jackson was Henry P. Bollinger, a mechanic for Brennecke Chevrolet; Harold Vest Beal, one of the first volunteers from Cape Girardeau County during the first World War, was the first man to register in Cape Girardeau in the third call-up.

1917

The Bauer Brothers Bakery at the corner of Broadway and Sprigg Street has been completed, and the first bake was made Tuesday morning; all the machinery worked perfectly.

W.E. Davidson, representative of one of the largest and best-known aviation companies in the country, is expected to arrive this afternoon to meet with A.M. Tinsley and Fred Groves about establishing an aviation school and airfield in the vicinity of Cape Girardeau.
