Visitors to the Mississippi River downtown waterfront have been treated to a firsthand view this week of the dredging operations of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; the corps' dredge Potter has been working on the Illinois side of the river's navigational channel between Cape Rock and the downtown riverfront.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Chaffee Columbia Sportswear, a clothing manufacturing plant, has added a second shift to keep up with product demand; the plant makes specialty sportswear.

1965

Work to replace the former clubhouse at the Cape Girardeau Country Club, which was destroyed by fire in December 1963, has begun; the construction superintendent is Bob Petrucka.

School Boy Patrol members through Cape Girardeau are sporting new jackets as part of a program emphasizing safety; the jackets were provided for about 80 boys by the Travelers Protective Association; according to E.H. Hartling, president of the Cape Girardeau post of the TPA, this is the first project the organization has had here.

1940

The Missouri National Guard is interested in leasing space for an armory in the Arena Building at the new city park on U.S. 61, to replace the armory on South West End Boulevard; the Guard would be willing to pay a rental of $100 per month so the two local companies could use the building.

Cape Girardeau and its district was represented in seven bouts last night in the opening round of the St. Louis Golden Gloves tournament; local boxers recording victories were Bob Parker, John Groves and Durwood Hendred; those who lost were Thedore Givens, Glenn Allen McKee, Buddy Jacobs and J.C. Scoles.

1915

A fire broke out in a room over William H. Campbell's jewelry store last night shortly after 7 and for a while threatened to destroy the building and spread to others; however, a quick response by firefighters and a bucket brigade which formed before the fire wagon arrived checked the flames in a few minutes; loss from the fire was small.

Engineer Ed Williams of Chaffee, Missouri, is spending a few days here with his brother, Henry Williams; Henry Williams has been on the sick list for some time.
