The city needs to act soon if it plans to replace the Cape Girardeau Central Municipal Swimming Pool bubble, members of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board said Monday; a replacement bubble over the pool likely will cost about $120,000.
Cape Girardeau public school teachers have a one-time chance this year for financial incentives to retire early; the school board approved the plan, which offers eligible teachers and administrators $20,000 or $25,000 in bonuses if they decide to retire after the end of this year.
A fire set by a 9-year-old boy, who was cleaning as punishment for an earlier arson attempt, did minor damage to the basement of Washington Elementary School yesterday afternoon; paper and wood in the janitor's room were set on fire, filling the building with smoke; the child was found in the building at about the time the fire was set.
Sgt. Claude H. Hagan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Omer L. Hagan of Illmo, was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for heroism Jan. 15 at Cu Chi, Vietnam; while returning from an outpost mission Nov. 5, the platoon leader's vehicle was hit by anti-tank rounds, small arms and grenade fire; Hagan exposed himself to enemy fire in order to remove the wounded man and other men to the landing zone for medical evacuation.
Organizing at the district's office, the Cape Special Road District board yesterday elected Fred A. Groves chairman; he succeeds the late W.F. Bergmann as head of the three-member board; the board made tentative plans for the year's work, but limited definite arrangements pending purchase of certain materials.
Cape Girardeau firemen were called upon to make a patriotic run last night, going to the east end of the Mississippi River traffic bridge to put out a fire which was about to ruin the little shanty used as a windbreak by members of the Illinois Reserve Militia, who are guarding the Illinois end of the bridge; a stove pipe had ignited the wooden wall of the shack.
There is much agitation in Jackson for construction of a new high school to replace the former Jackson Military Academy building now in use; some advocate a $50,000 bond issue, which they say would build a modern high school, complete with assembly hall, gymnasium, manual training rooms, domestic science rooms, chemical laboratories, etc.
CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Conductor Dave T. Wells and family are making preparations to move to Cape Girardeau; they have already rented a house there and will move as soon as it is put in readiness; the splendid school facilities of Cape Girardeau is one factor that is inducing them to move.
