A grand jury that convened here in early December has handed down indictments against 43 people suspected of drug operations in Cape Girardeau County; most of those arrested have been freed from jail on bonds, and trials are set for February, March and April.

Gasoline prices in Cape Girardeau fall to pre-Persian Gulf crisis levels, with some stations dropping prices to 99.9 cents a gallon.

About 85 public school staff members attend a special program for the training of teachers and administrators in working with educationally deprived children; the 18-week program is part of the federal education bill; in-service training will continue each weekend through May.

David Quigley has been appointed deputy juvenile officer for Cape Girardeau County; Quigley will be primarily in charge of supervision of youngsters who are on parole or probation; at present there are 21 such cases, a drop from last year.

1941

The Cape Girardeau City Council gives three readings to two ordinances that pave the way for a special election March 4 for the exchange of the site in Courthouse Park for the present Federal Building on Broadway; one ordinance calls the election, while the other authorizes Mayor Hinkle Statler to execute an offer to the federal government for exchange of the property; the plot in the park, which includes the Common Pleas Courthouse, measures approximately 240-by-280 feet, while the Broadway property measures about 125-by-165 feet.

In other action, the city council adopts a merchants' license tax embodying a levy on gross sales; the ordinance provides for a levy of $1 on each $1,000 gross retail business, with the licenses to be paid at the end of 12 months; the measure becomes effective Feb. 21.

1916

According to Judge W.B. Schaefer, the Cape Exchange Bank will open for business on Broadway in early March; all the stock for the bank has been subscribed, and a board of directors will be elected tonight by those subscribers; a lease has been secured on the room just east of the Bergmann-Bartels store, now occupied by a shoe-shining parlor.

Land owners on the east side of the river are hot over the levee being cut at a point near Gale, Illinois, and are making a special effort to find who did the work and have him prosecuted; about $3,000 in damage was done.
