Missouri Secretary of State Roy D. Blunt served as sponsor of the Eagle Scout class Saturday and provided the dedication address at the Southeast Missouri Council's annual Court of Honor; there were 53 Eagles in the 1991 class, one of the largest in the history of the local council.
Work has commenced on another portion of the downtown redevelopment effort; the work includes installation of inlaid brick pavement at the crosswalks and enlargement of the curb areas to accommodate benches and trees and to provide for handicapped ramps.
The city's sidewalk-repair program, started last fall in the downtown area, has been resumed; letters have gone to 30 owners of Broadway property asking that they make the repairs; the property stretches from Main Street to West End Boulevard; where curbs are in need of repair, the city asks that this be done, too.
The Cape Girardeau County Civil Defense volunteer fire unit is called again to the Cape Girardeau city dump about 1:30 a.m. to extinguish a fire described as very large; this is the second fire in a week at the dump near Hobbs Chapel.
Annual salaries of public-school teachers of Cape Girardeau are nearly back to what they were in the peak times of 1928-1929, before the Depression; the staff of 119 teachers now earns an average of $1,111.30 and the average in 1929 was $1,138.90 a year; there were 103 teachers in 1929, records show.
Sabotaged by the tire-rationing program, which prohibits schools from using their buses for anything but hauling youngsters to and from the school buildings, the 37th annual Southeast Missouri high school meet has been canceled for the first time in its long history by officials of Teachers College, which plays host for the big event.
Henry Wright, landscape architect and expert in city beautifying, was the guest speaker last evening at a chicken-pie dinner at Presbyterian Church, at which nearly 100 Cape Girardeau businessmen honored the memory of Abraham Lincoln and discussed various problems of community interest.
According to reports received here from San Diego, Lt. Patrick Frissell has joined the aviation corps at North Island and has been promoted to the rank of first lieutenant; Mrs. Frissell, the former Miss Rebecca Houck, and baby are with Frissell at San Diego.
