Southeast Missouri Hospital unveils its new building addition and the hospital's recently completed MRImaging Center at an open house; the afternoon event features tours of the new north addition to the Harrison Annex and the magnetic resonance imaging center; in addition, the hospital's new chapel is dedicated.

Dr. Paul Raabe is guest preacher at Trinity Lutheran Church; he is with the department of Exegetical Theology at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, where he is assistant professor of Old Testament.

1966

Cape Girardeau leaders met yesterday with federal officials in Washington, D.C., hoping to convince them of the need for a 6,500-foot runway here, but the question of the availability of federal funds remains; the Federal Aviation Agency previously approved a cash allocation to the city based on construction of a 5,800-foot runway.

The Cape County Parks and Recreation Board has accepted a preliminary survey and general plan for recreation in the county by Harland Bartholomew and Associates, St. Louis planning firm; the plan calls for a number of large park and recreation areas spread throughout the county, with scenic drives linking them.

1941

Scores of articles of clothing have been completed under the direction of the Cape Girardeau County chapter of the Red Cross; they will be sent to Jersey City, New Jersey, and then on to war-stricken England; the garments were made by dozens of women and girls volunteering to help in the relief effort.

A group of Girardeans, representing various phases of the city's life, hear an explanation of the low-cost housing project underway in Cairo, Illinois; indicative of the interest created, the gathering adopts a resolution to ask the Missouri Legislature to pass the necessary legislation to make possible such projects in Missouri.

1916

No wonder the Cape Girardeau City Council voted not to pay what it owes the special road district; a city official reveals the city doesn't have the funds on hand, having spent it on salaries and other things.

Another of those sturdy German-Americans who make Cape Girardeau County what it is, is called to his reward; "Uncle" Henry Wilhelm dies in the morning at his daughter's home in Jackson; he was born May 28, 1832, in Germany and emigrated to this country 58 years ago.
