Authorities are offering a $1,000 reward in a case of bus vandalism serious enough to close Jackson schools yesterday. Damage to bus tires, 104 of which were slashed, is estimated at $18,000. Between 10:30 p.m. Wednesday and 6:30 a.m. Thursday, vandals entered the school district's new bus transportation center on Orchard Drive and slashed tires on 24 of the 25 school buses parked there.
Cape Girardeau City Councilman Hugh White announced yesterday he will seek re-election, but two-term incumbent David Barklage says he won't run for another four years.
BELL CITY, Mo. -- Word that her husband, Maj. Robert Gregory, is missing in action in Vietnam came to Margaret Gregory over the weekend at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Fisher of Bell City. Gregory, a former resident of Cape Girardeau, is an Air Force pilot and was due to retire after this tour of duty.
The Jackson City Council last night decided to grant an additional 10 percent discount on city utilities billings in Jackson and to give city employees a Christmas bonus of 2 percent of their annual salaries.
A squad of 25 painters, in a nonstop painting demonstration, is finishing the painting of the Christian Church at noon, having started the work at 10 a.m. The men are members of Painters Local Union 1292. The Benjamin Moore Paint Co. supplied the paint.
Keeping in step with other communities, Cape Girardeau residents are shoving money across the counter to buy federal stamps and government bonds, all going directly to pay the cost of the defense program. Banks and the post office report the aggregate total of sales here is $268,000 since they started May 1.
Glen Hensley, son of S.D. Hensley of Jackson, one of the wealthiest and most prosperous scientific farmers in the county, has been appointed an assistant teacher of veterinary science in the short courses offered by the state university at Columbia, Missouri.
In keeping with the annual custom of the Salvation Army the world over to open a fund for Christmas cheer for the poor, the local branch has begun its plans for the campaign and will start Saturday to interest local residents to help make Christmas a happy event for the deserving children. The customary Christmas kettles will be placed at the corners.
