Damp, dreary weather doesn't deter several hundred Cape Girardeau County residents from paying their taxes at the county collector's offices in Cape Girardeau and Jackson in the morning. The heaviest turnout is at the collector's office in the county's administration building. At one point, the line of taxpayers stretches down the hall.
CHAFFEE, Mo. -- The financially-troubled Chaffee General Hospital will be taken over by a management group as the new year starts. The hospital board met yesterday and voted to enter into a tentative contract with an unnamed management group.
Mrs. Pauline Young is named manager of the state automobile license bureau in Cape Girardeau. She temporarily had been in charge of the office at 220 N. Main St. since the death of her husband, Russell "Sunny" Young, last December.
Lake Girardeau at Crump will be opened to fishing Saturday for the first time. If the weather cooperates, a heavy turnout of fishermen is expected at the new lake.
National Guard units, waiting at the armory in the Arena Building to go into training at Camp Joseph T. Robinson in Arkansas, are guests at the First Baptist Church morning service. They are seated together to hear a sermon on "Sources of Strength" by the pastor, Dr. H.H. McGinty.

CAIRO, Ill. --The city officials of Cairo compromised the Sunday-closing law with the 58 saloon keepers, and it has been announced that the saloons in the town will be closed on Sundays. Law-abiding citizens forced the city officials to enforce the state laws regarding Sunday closing. To placate liquor dealers, city fathers reduced the saloon license $200 per year.
The street cars are handicapped in giving their regular service this morning owning to one of the cars being derailed in the far west end of the city. The wheels of the car get off the track at the switch on William Street near West End Boulevard. It requires several hours' work to repair the damage.
