1964

Former Sikeston, Missouri, mayor, Maj. Joseph M. Cravens Jr., has been named the outstanding Air Force supply officer for the third consecutive year; Cravens is stationed at Stead Air Force Base just north of Reno, Nevada.

Notre Dame High School makes the first night a lively one in the 20th annual College High Holiday Tournament, as the Bulldogs upset undefeated and fourth-ranked Patton, Missouri, 68-67, in overtime; Bob Capshaw's jump shot in the closing seconds gives the 'Dogs the win at Houck Field House.

1939

Snow, which missed Cape Girardeau but came liberally to other sections over the weekend, is forecast for this area tonight or Wednesday; there was only a light trace of snow here Christmas morning after a blustery Saturday afternoon and night, which left highways slippery.

Major Bert S. Wampler, regular Army instructor for the 150th Infantry, Missouri National Guard, is notified of his transfer to Jefferson City, Missouri, where he will be attached to other units; his successor here hasn't been named; Wampler came to Cape Girardeau on Sept. 1, 1936.

1914

Cape Girardeau is again without water; the severe cold weather early in the morning freezes the water in the river near the pumping station so solidly, that the intake pipe is clogged; the city is dry and at the mercy of fire.

The new Chero-cola plant, in the Morrison building on South Spanish Street, is producing a tasty beverage; last week, workers used city water in their cola recipe with poor results; they have since switched to using pure well water.
