1990

A fine-arts print gallery has opened in downtown Cape Girardeau; Steve-Mark Inc., 16 N. Spanish St., has added the gallery to its store; in addition to prints, the gallery also has some original artwork, including work from local artists Candy Mecham, Tom Kloppenburg and Gary Lucy; the store is co-owned by brothers Steve and Mark Mueller.

The Rev. Patricia Williams was ordained to the priesthood Friday night at Advent Episcopal Church in Crestwood, Missouri; Williams, who is married to C.E. Williams, a professor of geography at Southeast Missouri State University, celebrates the Eucharist at the morning services at Christ Episcopal Church here.

1965

With Cape Girardeau's new city manager present, the city council last night set Dec. 28 as the date for the airport bond issue election; city manager Paul F. Frederick was there as an observer and won't begin his new job until Jan. 3.

W. Glenn Bishop, who missed being elected to the Cape Girardeau City Council on Sept. 14 by just 78 votes, won the fifth seat on the council by appointment last night; the building contractor will fill the vacancy left by resignation of W.E. Davis.

1940

Only 22 out of the first 100 Cape Girardeau County men who have been classified have been found ready for immediate military training by the local draft board, or classified A-1; the remaining 78 were placed in various other classifications.

Teachers College students come early and stay late as they register for the winter session of the school; one youth, eager to begin his college education, rises at 3 a.m. but can't get into the campus buildings at that early hour; by 6:30 a.m., there were more than 300 students in line and crowding the corridors of Academic Hall.

1915

J.M. Sarff of Gideon, Missouri, a hunter who spends several weeks in Minnesota each fall in pursuit of big game, passes through Cape Girardeau bringing with him a bear and a deer he killed shortly before leaving for home; the large, black bear and fine buck attract a big crowd as they are removed from the express car on the through train to the express car on the Gulf train.

Probably as a direct result of the fight made by H.H. Haas to become a director in the Cape Girardeau Building and Loan Association, Judge B.F. Davis will retire as director and as attorney for the association, a position he has filled for years.
