1965

Fifty to 75 people -- mostly teens -- last night attended a meeting at the Jackson High School gymnasium to discuss possibilities of starting a "teen town" at Jackson; a panel consisting of Becky McDowell, Jody Limbaugh, Keith Cracraft, Donna Penrod, Linda Arnhart and Debby Yancey explained the meeting was called to gauge public reaction and enlist support for the project.

Construction begins on the new Rust and Martin Home Furnishings Center on South Kingshighway; Burton J. Gerhardt Construction Co. is general contractor for the building.

1940

Louis Hecht, Main Street merchant, is back from a month's military training at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where 1,000 or more business and professional men responded to a call from Uncle Sam to come and get acquainted with the military situation in the United States; Hecht reports the business of war is much like he remembers it was when he went to France in the World War.

Members of the Cape Girardeau Police Department are being measured for new service uniforms, regulation blue suits to be purchased through the Ross Young agency; service overcoats may be purchased later, but that hasn't been decided.

1915

August and Henry Vogelsang are in New Madrid, Missouri, to be present at the letting of the contract to build the new courthouse there; New Madrid County is to have a new building to cost about $100,000 and will be the second finest in Southeast Missouri, Scott County having decidedly the best.

Melvin Shasserre, son of Mrs. William Shasserre, who is visiting Mrs. Herman Klages, was so ill from over indulgence of watermelon while on a visit to Benton, Missouri, that he was brought here for treatment; he and his mother live in St. Louis, and the boy is evidently unused to country life.
