The few voters who turned out in Cape Girardeau yesterday overwhelmingly endorsed a measure that will enable the city to move from at-large to ward city council elections in April; in addition voters authorized the expansion of the city limits westward with approval of a measure to annex the Twin Lakes subdivision.

John Mehner has been selected to lead the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, succeeding the retiring Robert Hendrix.

1968

Opening services for the new Church of the Bible Covenant are held in the new building at the corner of Sprigg and Walnut streets; the building has been under construction for the past three months; the church was started in February, holding services in the parsonage chapel at 1103 S. Sprigg St.; conducting the service is Dr. Remiss Rehfeldt, one of the general presiding officers of the denomination.

An outdoor Mass is held at St. Mary's Cathedral to celebrate the congregation's centennial; the Most Rev. Marion F. Forst, bishop of Dodge City, Kansas, and formerly pastor of St. Mary's, serves as homilist; he con-celebrates the Mass with the Most Rev. Ignatius J. Strecker, bishop of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese.

1943

Cape Girardeau County, in the fiscal year ending June 30, purchased $2,807,320 in war bonds, exceeding its quota for the year by $547,020; all but two counties in Southeast Missouri exceeded the quota during the year.

T-Sgt. Carlton G. Meyer of Jackson has been awarded the seventh bronze oak leaf to the Army Air Medal, according to the War Department; the additional citation was made for service in the North African and European areas, where Meyer has been stationed with the Army Air Forces.

1918

Several Protestant churches suspend Sunday services to allow their congregations to attend a talk given by the Rev. L.L. Pickett -- the "Kentucky Gatling Gun" -- in Courthouse Park in the evening; his theme is "How To Win the War."

A crowd of Cape Girardeau young people motor out to Burfordville on Whitewater River and spend the day swimming, dancing, eating, drinking and having a good time; Claud Henson has the forethought to take along his Victrola for dancing; among those going are Edna Koch, Poe Koch, Lorene Orrell, Irene Koch, Gussie Drury, Alma Dannenmueller, Gilla Reiker, Anna Jones, Dewey Lynch, Harry Mansfield, Elmo Lynch, Dodine Reiker, Bill Mansfield, Bud Reiker, Creamery Eugas, Harvey Harper and Ted Reiker.
