Carl Rosenquist, principal of St. Vincent de Paul School here, was supposed to welcome his students to a new academic year Monday; instead, he leaves in the morning for Cherry Point, North Carolina; there, he will join thousands of other reserve servicemen who have been recalled to active duty to support Operation Desert Shield.

Officials with Greyhound say the company will move its bus station to 40 N. Sprigg St. early next month; Nip Kelley, a local contractor who also operates a taxi service here, will become the station's new agent.

1965

The Cape Girardeau Public Schools -- with enrollments expected to surpass the 5,000 mark for the first time -- are to open Wednesday morning for a new nine-month term; Wednesday also will be the opening date for the city's three parochial grade schools -- St. Vincent's and St. Mary's Catholic schools and Trinity Lutheran School; Campus School will begin classes Sept 7; Notre Dame High School is already in session, having opened this week.

Rural telephone subscribers in the Chaffee, Missouri, area will be switched from eight-party lines to four-party lines effective Sept. 23 or earlier.

1940

With the St. Vincent's Convent remodeled, a kindergarten will be opened there when classes convene at St. Vincent's Grade School on Sept. 3; to be known as the Loretta Kindergarten and located at 221 Merriwether St., it will be under the direction of Sister Lucina of Denver, who is specially trained in the work.

In an effort to complete the new city park before the start of the SEMO District Fair on Sept. 24, plans are being made to transfer about 40 WPA workers from sidewalk-building crews in Cape Girardeau to the park; fencing around the racetrack is the top priority.

1915

The Frisco Railroad says it will restore the local Cape Girardeau-Poplar Bluff (Missouri) train Monday afternoon; that decision came after a conference among the president of the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club, a representative of commercial travelers, and Frisco's passenger traffic manager in St. Louis.

Ringling Brothers Circus will play Cape Girardeau late in September or early in October; Herman Bock, the P.T. Barnum of show business in Cape Girardeau, believes the big show will be here; he recently received a letter from the Ringlings asking about conditions here; he answered at once, saying thousands of people are "dying" for a circus.
