Since the beginning of the year, Cape Girardeau has had four shootings -- three of them fatal; two were declared homicides; the Aug. 10 shooting death of a 15-year-old girl allegedly by her 16-year-old boyfriend has brought the situation to a head in many respects; public outcry for a solution to end the increasing violence has resounded in the police department, city council chambers and administrative offices of City Hall.

Just like yesterday and the day before, students in Cape Girardeau's public schools are dismissed early because of the high heat and humidity.

1968

CHARLESTON, Mo. -- J.D. Bearden, 47, a Cairo, Illinois, nightclub owner narrowly escaped death late last night, when a bomb exploded in his car as he turned on the ignition; the mysterious blast severely injured Bearden, who is being treated in a Sikeston, Missouri, hospital.

State College, in the seven-year period from 1961 through 1967, had the second largest percentage increase in number of students of any of the four-year schools in Missouri's state-supported college system, including the University of Missouri; only Central Missouri State at Warrensburg had a greater increase in students.

While taking the punch out of the hot weather by a dip in the municipal swimming pool at a late and unauthorized hour last night, eight teen-age boys had their moonlight plunge interrupted by police; officers A.J. Bingenheimer and Orville Eakers were able to surprise the boys, sans swim suits, and took them into custody.

Henry T. Putz , the son of Mr. and Mrs. John G. Putz of Jackson, has been chosen by the Rodesian Iron & Steel Commission in Africa to do the engineering work for a new steel plant the commission is building at Que Que; Putz is also to survey the town site, and to make the survey for a dam across the Que Que River from which the new town and plant will bet their water supply.

1918

A street car caught fire at the corner of Broadway and Spanish Street last night while making the rounds of the city; fortunately, "Snipples" Ruediger discovered the blaze and sounded the alarm, a bucket of water extinguishing the flames.

Second Lt. Kenrick Burroughs arrives in Cape Girardeau in the morning from Camp Pike, Arkansas, where he was given his commission last week after a 10-week course in an officers training camp; he'll spend a short furlough with his mother, Mrs. Frank Burroughs, and sisters, Mary and Jean; Burroughs, who graduated from Yale College several years ago and Harvard Law last spring, has been assigned to Camp Beauregard at Alexandria, Louisiana.
