After being shut down for nearly two months because of high water, the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority's public dock is back in operation; traffic was reopened on the Mississippi River Sunday, and the next day a barge was unloaded at the dock.

Southeast Missouri State University has 7,878 students enrolled in the fall semester, down 307 or 3.8 percent from last year; the figures reflect first-day enrollment; classes began Monday; the drop was expected by administration because of increased admission standards in recent years.

Old-Fashioned Day is held at New Testament Baptist Church, with a basket dinner following the morning worship service; those attending wear fashions from "yester years," and there is a display of antique items; the night service is held in lantern light.

David Steinhagen, who has been operating the former Haman Funeral Home, has purchased a site on the north side of Independence Street, between Ellis and Pacific streets, and will construct a new funeral home there; Steinhagen purchased the Haman interests in 1967, coming here from Winnipeg, Canada.

Yesterday was one of the hottest days of the season in Cape Girardeau, the mercury climbing to 101 degrees; but today is even hotter, as 103 degrees is recorded at 2 p.m. at the cement plant.

CAIRO, Ill. -- The Carl Myers Construction Co. of Campbellsburg, Indiana, is making progress on a dike project north of Cairo, constructing 7,200 feet of dirt levee 30 feet higher, under government supervision; the levee will run south from the Cache River dike and at the south end will connect with a present levee, south of the Ohio River; the north end for the new levee is opposite the south end of the Mound City, Illinois, dike, 2,600 feet of which is still to be built.

The Rev. A.H. Buelteman, pastor of Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, preaches at the union church service in Courthouse Park in the evening.

At an evening meeting of the young people's societies of the different Cape Girardeau churches at the Presbyterian Church, a Federated Young Peoples Society is organized; the object of the society will be to take up the problems of the young people and assist the adult societies in whatever betterment work they may be engaged in.
