GALE, Ill. -- Officials with the Illinois Environmental Protection Administration say all waste oil and solvents that were contaminated with toxic materials now have been removed from the Ilada Energy Reclamation site near here.

Janet Gluesing of Cape Girardeau is garnishing her house with red, white and blue ribbons to show her support of U.S. troops in the Middle East, and she hopes others will follow suit; Gluesing's 23-year-old son, Jamie Newcomer, is among the soldiers deployed in Saudi Arabia as part of Operation Desert Shield.

The city council yesterday voted to take Civil Defense out of the hands of a salaried director and put it in the hands of the Auxiliary Police, where it will be operated on a volunteer basis; in other action, the council authorized a pay raise of $40 per month for all full-time city employees.

Ozark Air Lines has asked the Civil Aeronautics Board for permission to fly from Cape Girardeau to Little Rock, Arkansas; a spokesman for Ozark says the airline wishes to add two flights per day, with one or both originating in Chicago; from there stops would include St. Louis, Cape Girardeau and Little Rock.

1940

Construction of a hangar for the Consolidated School of Aviation, on Highway 74, three miles south of Cape Girardeau, will begin next week, says Clyde Primo, head of the school; the hangar, metal and wood measuring 60 by 80 feet, will house four or more planes; Primo already has started his course in flying and has about 10 students.

Plans for the registrations of aliens at the Cape Girardeau and Jackson post offices have been announced by postmaster Nat. M. Snider; registration will open throughout the country Aug. 27 and will continue through Dec. 26.

1915

The river stage at Cape Girardeau reaches 34.3 feet at noon, but is expected to crest today short of the predicted 37-foot mark; the flooding has taken a toll, aside from the damage done to railroad lines; crops in all directions from Cape Girardeau have suffered; a small, private levee breaks in the morning across the river, inundating a wide expanse of farmland.

The six graduated nurses of Cape Girardeau have formed an organization and have established a Nurse's Register to be at Saint Francis Hospital; Mrs. Elizabeth Allen is president of the new group, Beatrice Conner is secretary and Cora Daley, treasurer; the other members are Noreen McCain, Miss Albright and Gladis Clark.
